Job Introduction

NNL is looking for a driven individual to lead our mission to unlock the opportunity for nuclear energy to drive large-scale, clean hydrogen production, heat and other industrial processes. The Technology Leader position is to lead the development of NNL’s service offerings within this new area of the industry, working closely with the Government Account Director and other Subject Matter Experts for NNL’s Nuclear Hydrogen Programme. This individual will drive outstanding quality and delivery of technical programmes to exceed customer expectations, managing the integration of multiple interdependent but parallel workstreams for diverse customers on the development and deployment of nuclear-derived hydrogen technologies. The successful candidate will identify the technical capabilities required for success, working with the technical teams to develop new capability. In addition, working with external stakeholders in government and industry to drive forward the development of this industry, unlocking the challenges along the way, is also a key part of this position.

Main Responsibilities

  • Technical Authority  (Subject Matter Expert) for the integration of nuclear derived hydrogen into the energy network.
  • Technical Authority (Subject Matter Expert) for the deployment of hydrogen generation technologies alongside Nuclear installations.
  • Delivering quality outputs; as a Cross-Discipline Technical leader of the delivery team, applying your technical understanding to ensure the delivery of relevant research and development projects across the workstream that meet customer objectives.
  • Developing NNL Capability: Working closely with the technical teams to understand and deliver a technical capability which positions NNL at the forefront of this evolving industry.
  • Driving forward the Nuclear Hydrogen Agenda: Targeted and focused stakeholder engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders, driving forward the sector in this area  and delivering demonstrable progress towards the overarching opportunity.
  • Cross Sector Stakeholder Engagement: Developing Nuclear hydrogen from a whole value chain perspective, developing stakeholder relationships across the industry, understanding the interfaces and what actions needed to be taken to ensure nuclear energy is a part of an integrated energy system, show rapid and demonstrable progress towards the end goal.
  • The overarching accountability of this role is NNL’s success in driving forward the sector, and securing future revenue streams, from government in the first instance, but other industry stakeholders as we develop near term, and future opportunities that enable nuclear energy to maximise contribution to Net Zero.
  • Coaching and Mentoring of technical teams new to the application of nuclear energy for non-electric applications.
  • Develop academic links-develop research groups to work with.
  • Building and leading teams to enable successful delivery of large complex and technical government programmes.
  • Leading S&T capability development through close working with the Nuclear Hydrogen Technical lead.
     

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the Technology Leader role should:

  • Degree qualified, Science or Engineering discipline
  • Track record of delivering quality technical outputs on government contracts in the nuclear industry, including delivery of MULTI-DISCIPLINARY (R&D) technical programmes in a commercial environment and securing achievable funding routes and the capabilities required for successful deliver.
  • Development and delivery of innovation and technology development programmes in partnership with industry, academic and public organisations.
  • Good understanding of the hydrogen economy, it’s current role and potential role in the energy system, and future markets, including the stakeholders within it and government plans for development and growth.
  • Knowledge of hydrogen production technologies and end to end hydrogen economy including standards, financing and end use technologies.
  • Experience of delivering innovation programmes delivered to Government to enhance the sectors contribution to industrial and climate policy objectives.
  • Proven knowledge of the government stakeholder, solid understanding of Government decision making to support development of funding routes and overall delivery of policy objectives.
  • Track record of nurturing stakeholder relationships internally and externally, including experience of engaging with central government stakeholders to ensure nuclear energy is appropriately considered in all potential future markets and knowledge of pathways to Net Zero including the role that nuclear energy can play in multi-sector decarbonisation.
  • Ability to innovate and solve complex energy problems.
  • Understanding of international stakeholders in the nuclear sector and synergistic research and innovation programmes.
  • Ability to achieve SC Clearance
