National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is conducting a major programme of work for one of our important customers in heavily shielded cells in our Active Handling Facility (AHF) on Sellafield site.  The programme requires NNL to utilise a number of scientific techniques to conduct Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) of nuclear material.  In order to meet demanding timelines, NNL is implementing a shift rotation pattern and is recruiting for various positions to meet the demand.

The Shift Team Leader will be required to plan and supervise the work of their shift team, in accordance with technical and delivery requirements of the project.  They will oversee their team’s deployments who will work with master slave manipulators on a variety of equipment to deliver scientific data. They will also be a task supervisor with nuclear health and safety accountability for their team, Area Owner and be required to be a member of the AHF emergency response team.

The position requires the development and maintenance of strong working relationships with project managers, technical leads and the Capability Manager for the area. The role holder is responsible for delivering planned programmes of work within their shift team to time, cost and the required high quality standards.

In instances (e.g. planned plant outages)  the post holder may be required to revert temporarily to a standard day working pattern, but will move back onto a shift pattern as necessary to support the accelerated work programme.

Main Responsibilities

  • Co-ordination and line management of shift team resources in conjunction with the Capability Manager to deliver an agreed programme to safety, quality and cost. 
  • Adherence to EHSSQ requirements within the facility and ensuring high standards of nuclear safety and quality are cascaded to the team
  • Conducting assurance activities to confirm adherence to local, management and project proecdures
  • Responsible for coordinating delivery of the Defence technical PIE programme in AHF allocated to their shift team. 
  • Responsible for ensuring coordination and planning is performed in accordance with the aligned objectives as agreed by Capability Managers, technical leads and Project Managers, by maintaining a strong link with technical leads. 
  • Ensure employees are suitably qualified, competent and experienced to fulfil their roles through effective leadership, coaching, mentoring and development of both individual and the lead team
  • Assist the Capability Manager in understanding costs associated with equipment maintenance and repair and SQEP training specific to the delivery area..
  • To be familiar with on-plant processes in order to understand the interactions between plant operational demands and planning for customer work.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Shift Team Leader:

  • Degree qualified in physical science or engineering discipline, or equivalent level of industrial qualifications in this area. 
  • Extensive experience of working within an industrial environment and delivering work to time, cost and quality.
  • Experience of leading a team in a highly regulated industry with exceptional health and safety practices
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team of operations, engineering and technical staff to deploy specially designed equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills with people from all levels of the organisation, including external customers.
  • Due to the security requirements of this post all applicants must be UK Nationals
  • SC cleared (or ability to become so)

Desirable Criteria for Shift Team Leader:

  • Previous shift working
  • Knowledge of NDT measurement techniques 
  • Monitored radiation worker (or ability to become so)
  • Introduction to Applied Project Management (or similar)
