The Instrumentation Specialist will lead work on several aspects to instrumentation development for the nuclear environment. This is an important role working as a Technical Lead for multi-disciplinary teams and will require interaction with a range of internal and external customers.

The position will primarily support customer projects by identification of requirements, writing proposals for research and other customer work, experimental design, providing experimental data, data analysis, testing and underpinning evidence for instrumentation and processes. Technical report writing, cross team communication, troubleshooting of instrumentation, writing C# .Net code on windows and other platforms and image processing. Also, on-plant maintenance of instrumentation including radiation detector systems and bespoke physical sensors.

Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for the Instrumentation Specialist: 

  • Understands and delivers NNL’s EHSS&Q and Assurance Objectives.
  • To deliver designated work to standards of safety, quality, cost, and time.
  • Adheres to all relevant process and procedures.
  • Motivated to develop the skills and abilities that can benefit the team and company.
  • Where required support the technical leads and Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) in producing project estimates.
  • Maintain good communication with internal and external customers.
  • Take responsibility and be pro-active in the development of technical knowledge under guidance of technical leads and SME’s.
  • Work collaboratively across multi-discipline teams to achieve mutually beneficial goals.
  • Be expected to problem solve difficult projects and on-plant commissioning.
  • Designing experimental rigs for testing and underpinning evidence for instrumentation and processes.
  • Be able to work from various sites depending on project requirements.
  • The position will be expected to develop into a Technical Lead and Safety Supervisor roles.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for the Instrumentation Specialist: 

  • BEng Hons Degree in electrical / electronic engineering / instrumentation.
  • On plant experience is essential.
  • Radiometric instrumentation experience.
  • Hold IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent as a minimum qualification.
  • Able to write and debug C# .Net code for instrument analysis software.
  • Extensive knowledge of Customer requirements and system design, system integration and testing.
  • Ability to interface on a technical level with client engineers and stakeholders.
  • Able to write User Requirement Specifications, Task Proposals for customer and research projects.
  • Testing and underpinning evidence for instrumentation and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work with engineering, sensor and instrument suppliers.
  • Ability to achieve SC level clearance.

Desirable Criteria for the Instrumentation Specialist: 

  • Knowledge of CE marking of systems (EMC, LVD). 
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety mechanisms (SM), safety related equipment (SRE) and Safety Features (SF).
  • Member of a professional institution.
  • Full driving license as some travel between sites may be required.
