Job Introduction

As part of National Nuclear Laboratories (NNL’s) future plans and our stated commitments to being a Purpose-led organisation - we now need to add to our communications team to ensure we meet our more ambitious plans and commitments to deliver greater benefit to society. We’re strengthening our team and creating extra capacity to do our best work to deliver communications both internally and externally with a diverse range of audiences, from our own colleagues to leading academic institutions and HM Government.

This is where you will come in. We’re strengthening our communications, creating extra capacity through additional capability in science and technology communications.
We’re looking for an individual who has spent time studying and or working in the sciences or technical environments. Someone who knows when to keep the message technical and complex and when to add the plain English effect. A creative storyteller and a newshound who will work within NNL and alongside our external public affairs agency and communications team to identify the rich content we hold. There’s plenty of hiding our light under a bushel right now, we need you to make the connections, build the network, and root out the fabulous stories we know we have.

You’ll also need to enhance and nurture the channels we need to develop our external relations activity and bring our content to life.

A killer instinct for spotting a story is an absolute necessity and maximising the value of opportunities will be second nature for you. We need you to create integrated PR and communications plans which reach a variety of audiences and align with our key messages and positioning.

Initially the role will focus on major projects such as the Advanced Fuel Cycles Programme (AFCP) Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme - AFCP (nnl.co.uk) . This programme benefits from a well-formed communications plan but alongside this be prepared to be digging deep into all the amazing initiatives we also have going on.

Alongside the ability to tell a story you will also need the ability to be a creative support to colleagues, who will act as your internal client, being able to interpret complex data, suggest other ways of interpretation and be pretty tenacious and resilient as it can be detailed at times.

You might have a PR agency background and are looking for a step into an in-house role, or you may already be working in an in-house team in a fast-paced environment and be ready for your next challenge.

Whatever your background, if you can sniff out a story, de-code the technical stuff and make it relevant to a range of audiences, craft it into something appealing then make it work across a range of channels, you might just have found your next job.

Main Responsibilities

Here’s what we’ll expect from you:

  • Deliver an integrated content plan to support the delivery of our key science programmes for NNL.
  • Create high-quality and creative campaigns to promote NNL science and the variety of our organisation to external audiences.
  • Build strong relationships with the NNL comms team and the external agency provider and ensure that all activity is planned and communicated across internal and external communication channels.
