National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is conducting a major programme of work for one of our important customers in heavily shielded cells in our Active Handling Facility (AHF) on Sellafield site.  The programme requires NNL to utilise a number of scientific techniques to conduct Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) of nuclear material as well as maintaining a robust archive of irradiated materials located on site. The PIE Technical Support Assistant will be predominantly responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all information and records for irradiated materials that have been archived and are located at our Windscale site.

The PIE Technical Support Assistant will also be required to operate equipment that is contained within the cells of the AHF using master-slave manipulators.  Working as part of a team of technicians, supervised by a Technical Lead or a Task Supervisor.

The position requires the maintenance of strong working relationships with the immediate team, projects and facility teams. The programme requires team members to work to high quality standards and demonstrate an enabling, pro-active attitude to resolving issues.  In accordance with any nuclear industry positions, individuals will need to demonstrate a high degree of nuclear professionalism, adhering and contributing to a positive health and safety culture.

Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for the Technical Support Assistant

  • Responsibility for upkeep and maintenance of information and records for the NNL contribution to the NNUF irradiated materials archive located at Windscale.
  • Ensure any archive information is readily available at all times to any relevant customer workstreams.
  • Maintain logbooks and record sheets for traceability and to ensure all relevant regulations and procedures are understood and adhered to.
  • To ensure all work is completed safely and accurately maintaining traceability and quality at all times.
  • Adhere to the Health and Safety, Quality and Security requirements as stipulated by NNL, the site license company and the project.
  • To carry out remote handling operations in AHF to deliver work packages as directed by the Capability Manager.
  • Maintaining strong communication links with various contacts, including both the exchange and interpretation of information with people at a number of levels, both inside and outside the organisation.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for the Technical Support Assistant

  • Degree qualified in materials science or related discipline
  • Demonstrable experience of managing and maintaining data and/or physical information stores.
  • Ability to communicate well within a project environment, including excellent communications with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable high standard of written reporting.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).
  • Ability to view UK eyes only information – this involves being a British citizen as defined in the British Nationality Act 1981 (British Nationality Act 1981 (legislation.gov.uk)).  Please note if you hold a dual nationality of which one nationality is British you may still be able to view UK eyes only information it does however depend on what your other nationality is.  

Desirable Criteria for the Technical Support Assistant

  • Good knowledge of document management systems and requirements for safe systems of work.
  • Ability to manage discrete packages of technical work.
  • Awareness of grant funded multi-partner programmes with an understanding of delivery and reporting.
