The purpose of this role is to support security oversight of all projects across the NNL estate (including those of which are owned by external partners) ensuring security consideration is made, security impact is assessed, and security solutions are identified and implemented. In addition, to represent as the NNL Security & Resilience intelligent customer for appropriate security related projects ensuring that NNL’s current and future assets are subjected to the appropriate assessments and security solutions.

Location for this role is flexible. 

Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Security Advisor (Projects): 

  • Support security oversight of NNL projects (or others), embedding security as required into the project lifecycle ensuring impacts to NNL and its assets are considered and addressed as necessary.
  • Identify and manage project security risks, vulnerabilities and incidents including the identification of mitigating actions, statutory reporting to and managing the regulator.
  • Reporting progress of projects to the Senior Security Advisor - Projects or nominee. Detailing achievements of key milestones or newly identified risks to programmes.
  • Undertake security impact assessments ensuring changes/modifications impacting on Nuclear Security are appropriately identified, categorised and prioritised from the offset.
  • Develop and implement security arrangements/mitigations to support project execution and contingency arrangements through the production of Security Modification Proposals, procedures, and instructions.
  • Manage key stakeholders of security projects ensuring appropriate Subject Matter Experts have been engaged whilst facilitating other projects as a point of contact, providing security advice and support in line with NNL’s Security Policies, Arrangements, and best practice.
  • Liaise with facility Security & Resilience Support Officers and Security Liaison Officers as appropriate gaining operational support as required and provide updates to the Senior Security Advisor - Operations where project output makes change to security business as usual, ensuring detailed and documented handover is undertaken prior to project close.
  • Identify changes and arrange updates to the Nuclear Site Security Plans (or supporting documentation) as required following or during project implementation. Ensuring appropriate governance is followed and approvals are gained.
  • Represent Security and Resilience as the ‘intelligent customer’ for security projects ensuring NNL and regulatory expectations are being met via quality assurance of security solutions through auditing and compliance checks. Ensuring findings are shared and addressed as necessary.
  • Proactive in Continuous Improvement: Promote best practice within the function by, for example, actively participating in Operational Experience Feedback (OEF) briefs and implementing learning identified from other facilities/projects.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Security Advisor (Projects): 

  • Ability to obtain DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency).
  • Level 3 qualification (or equivalent experience) in a security discipline.
  • Experience in working in a regulated environment, be detail orientated, and able to work to stringent deadlines, whilst maintaining discretion at all times.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to analyse and interpret complex information from several, sometimes conflicting sources, with a proven problem-solving ability in order to make decisions based upon this information.
  • Experience of supporting delivery of a significant security project, preferably on the Sellafield site, including engagement with diverse stakeholders.
  • Detailed knowledge of security requirements relating to the ONR Security Assessment Principles, Nuclear Security Regulations, and experience in applying these principles to security solutions.
  • Ability to use impact and influence to achieve mutually beneficial goals across a wide range of internal and external resources of various disciplines.

Desirable Criteria for Security Advisor (Projects): 

  • A thorough awareness of nuclear, conventional safety and security requirements applicable to their area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ability to work flexibly within the Security & Resilience function, within areas as deemed appropriate by the Security and Resilience Manager and in support of NNL’s Security and Resilience Strategy.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of physical protection systems, their design, performance, industry developments and application.
