The Plant Engineer (V&S DAP) is a highly visible position of authority within NNL supporting the Engineering Manager to ensure the company's continued compliance to all regulations governing the nuclear industry and Site Licence Conditions. The role is responsible for maintaining plant in state of readiness, leading on incident and event management, and assessing the impact and coordination of the activities required to achieve compliance in the most effective way for the business. 

The ideal candidate will be experienced in working in a regulatory capacity, detail orientated, and be able to work to stringent deadlines.

Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Plant Engineer:

  • Accountable for overall control and supervision of people and plant for their area(s) of responsibility under site license condition 26. 
  • Primary point of contact for all ventilation and systems within B170 and must be available on site whilst any work is being carried out.
  • Accountable for checking silent hours logs and computerised building management systems to ensure that their plant is in safe and secure condition to permit entry by others.
  • Responsible for locking and securing areas of their control (i.e. plantrooms).
  • Responsible for being the primary interface for all discussions with the Site OCM where there is an anticipated interaction with vents and services systems.
  • Responsible for daily start up/close down checks and records associated with the compliance record.
  • Attend Operational Focus meetings daily as a quorate member to discuss the status of nuclear safety on plant.
  • Must have a knowledge of daily activities that are being carried out on plant, including visits.
  • Accountable for the safe and compliant handover of plant from operations to maintenance for proof testing.
  • Attend any forums (internal or external) as requested to keep abreast of best practices around other NNL Laboratories, responsible for sharing and implementing any learning.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Plant Engineer:

  • Degree Qualified (electrical discipline) or HND in an equivalent discipline. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of stated qualifications.
  • Hold an engineering based apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Safety Case awareness, demonstrable knowledge of nuclear Safety Mechanisms (SM), Safety Related (SR) and Safety Features (SF).
  • Ability to demonstrate conservative decision making, even in pressure situations.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of ventilation systems and cascade requirements.
  • Ability to obtain DV level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Plant Engineer:

  • Provide evidence of having initiative and ability to plan and direct own work and work independently.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of operational & maintenance requirements.
