Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Metallography Summer Placement Student 

The Metallography team within NNL, is an important component of our PIE (Post Irradiation Evaluation) delivery to projects of national importance to the UK. Our customers are from both Defence and Civil sectors and rely on our specialised knowledge and skills to provide key data for safe nuclear reactor operations.

The key activities of the team are to produce high quality metallographic samples, which are then examined on microscopes (both optical and electron). The images are analysed and important parameters and features are assessed, to allow the delivery of high-quality reports for our customers.

This 10 week, summer student placement in metallography, is a fantastic opportunity to work within the team, both learning the key principles and activities and contributing to the on-going programmes currently underway.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Metallography Summer Placement Student

  • Studying for a Degree in Materials Science and be on track for obtaining a 2:1.
  • Able to commit to the 10 weeks of the summer placement. 
  • Ability to act independently under guidance.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to develop good networking skills.
  • Ability to obtain BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks).
