Job Introduction

A vacancy for “Senior Technical Lead” has arisen in the Nuclear & Reactor Physics team for a high calibre, motivated scientist or engineer with expertise relevant to nuclear physics and modelling. This individual will lead in NNL’s delivery of high quality, innovative products and services to its customers in both the UK and overseas.

In addition, the successful candidate will lead and drive the implementation of the nuclear R&D which is helping to shape UK energy policy and strategy towards a net zero carbon future.

The “Senior Technical Lead” role in Nuclear & Reactor Physics Team will enable NNL to develop this capability and provide larger technical oversight of a Virtual Reactor Capability team positioning NNL to secure future work in the BEIS NIP (Nuclear Innovation Programme), the BEIS AMR (Advanced Modular Reactor) programme and UK SMR (Small Modular Reactor) Programme.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction to Project and Programme Managers by devising R&D programmes to meet customer needs.
  • Ensure NNL’s technical and quality outputs meet company and international standards.
  • Support the Capability Leader and Manager in driving R&D programmes to grow NNL technical capability to support reactor developments, including nuclear codes.
  • Engage Account Directors and Programme Managers to develop relationships with national and international customers and the supply chain.
  • Identifying, creating and developing technical reactor physics and thermal-hydraulics capabilities to meet the future needs of our customers.
  • To have a clear forward vision of the UK nuclear landscape and to align a capability strategy to this forward vision.
  • Devise the forward R&D work programmes for key high-profile projects such as BEIS AMR (Advanced Modular Reactors), BEIS UK-SMR (Small Modules Reactors) and the BEIS NIP (Nuclear Innovation Programme).

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of GenIII+ and GenIV reactor designs
  • Proven track record of expertise in reactor neutronics and thermal-hydraulic codes
  • Proven engagement with UK Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process
  • Track record of work package scoping and delivery of large and complex technical programmes
  • Experience of technical oversight to multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience of technical development of scientists and engineers
  • Track record in academic and supply chain engagement
  • Proven ability to understand and influence key stakeholders and shape and drive the agenda
  • BSc degree and MSc degree in physics, engineering, mathematics or a relevant discipline
