NNL is looking for a high calibre, motivated scientist to join the Corrosion and Plant Chemistry team based at Stonehouse (Gloucestershire). The team is part of the Fuels, Reactors and Recycling capability within NNL which delivers commercial R&D to help solve a wide range of corrosion-based challenges in the nuclear industry and has a long history of successful delivery of work programmes to an exceptional standard. The group supports strategic programmes across the industry, as well as provide advice on strategic UK issues. Much of the work historically supports plant operation and lifetime extension, however, the team recently been focusing on new emergent work to support the large next generation R&D programmes including UKSMR, fast breeder reactors as well as molten salt reactor designs.
Candidates must have a relevant science degree (Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics) and have the ability to: (a) critically interrogate large amounts of technical information relating to a complex problem, and identify the key issues and resources; and (b) solve complex problems in an innovative manner using a combination of desk based research, experimental work and modelling.
- Working flexibly as part of a specialist team to provide focused R&D solutions to solve corrosion and plant chemistry related challenges to a wide range of UK and international customers.
- Lead and deliver on (internal and external) customer projects to time, in budget, and to required environmental, health, safety and quality (EHSS&Q) standards.
- Application of experimental techniques in support of customer work, making use of facilities both within, and external to, NNL.
- Authorship, checking and approval of technical documents (calculations notes, technical memos, technical reports and open literature journal articles).
- Presenting work performed to customers, project meetings and at international conferences.
- Development and maintenance of strong customer delivery links.
- Ad-hoc problem solving to resolve day to day technical challenges that emerge.
- Engaging with technical experts across NNL, looking to support their work and vice-versa.
The Ideal Candidate
- A directly relevant science degree (e.g. chemistry, material science or physics) or an equivalent level of relevant experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of water chemistry, materials selection to control corrosion and reduce corrosion transport within nuclear power stations.
- Experience in application of one or more chemistry/corrosion related modelling approaches, for example, speciation, chemical kinetics, transport, electrochemistry.
- A proven ability to safely deliver complex R&D projects.
- Demonstration of a positive attitude to safety, security and other EHSS&Q requirements.
- A pro-active and flexible approach to customer support and project delivery in making sure that requirements and expectations are met or exceeded.
- Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team environment as well as independently.
- Proven experience of writing high quality technical reports/journal articles.
- Positive attitude to learning and supporting the wider development of the team.
- A PhD in a relevant Science discipline.
- A Chartered Chemist, Scientist or Engineer in a relevant discipline.
- Understanding of electrochemistry and applied techniques.
- Experience of applying multiple characterisation techniques to solving challenges.
- Computer model development and verification in FORTRAN 90, C++ and/or Visual Basic.
- Experience of working with academia
- Experience of technical contract management for specialist scientific/technical services, including production of specifications.
- Experience of working with customers/clients and commercial/business functions to produce project proposals and estimates for commercial bids.
