Job Introduction

Job Purpose:

The proposed role is to provide technical leadership within the technical capability of Effluent and Environmental Chemistry Team. This is an important leadership role within the team and required to supplement current staff in this area, demand for whom is very high.

Main Responsibilities

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Technical leadership in the planning and interpretation of experimental research
  • Technical leadership in the fields of effluent and environmental chemistry,
  • Maintain technical links with other technical leads within the team
  • Liaise and work with other stakeholders within NNL to benefit the team (eg account directors, innovation team, research fellows etc)
  • Development of commercial work programmes and collaborative research with academia and partner organisations 
  • Training and development of other team members
  • Interpretation and presentation of results including contributions to Technical Memoranda and Reports. 
  • Work alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements.
  • Keep abreast of developments in their own field and apply them to projects.
  • Provide support to develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company. 
  • Support team to meet objectives

The Ideal Candidate

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential skills / Qualifications
•    Higher degree qualified in chemistry, chemical engineering or geochemistry with extensive experience 
•    Experience working in a laboratory environment including the planning of experiments and interpretation of results (ideally familiar with handling radioactive substances) 
•    Familiarity with a range of analytical techniques e.g. SEM, ICP/OES-MS, alpha spectrometry, gamma spectrometry, LSC.
•    Experience in radiochemistry
•    Knowledge of radioactive waste disposal
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable skills / qualifications
•    Track record of successfully developing work programmes with key customers
•    An in-depth understanding Sellafield Site Effluent plant processes and operations
chartered by appropriate organisation
•    Pre-existing technical understanding of effluent management and waste characterization in relation to nuclear applications is desirable, otherwise alternative technical knowledge and experience that is complimentary and hence an indicator of the ability to quickly pick this up.
