This role can be based across any of NNL's sites but will generally be focused on the North West of England

Main Responsibilities

Here’s what we’ll expect from you:

Working closely with the NNL ExCo, business, functions and site leads you will lead us to design and deliver Responsible Business Programmes that span Environment, People, Social & Community Investment and Governance & Investment Stewardship.

As Head of Responsible Business you will have the autonomy and capability to drive change and implement a series of new organisation-wide corporate responsibility programmes. These will be in line with our stated commitments to being Purpose-led, in support of our stated Values & Behaviours and focused on delivery to our chosen SDGs (Climate Action (13) and Reducing Inequalities (10)).

Designing our Responsible Business Charter and/or suitable governance standards and scrutiny mechanisms (including policies) you will further support us to best reflect NNLs commitments being Purpose driven and to delivering enhanced environmental and social impact through its beyond BAU contributions to society.

Working collaboratively with key internal stakeholders and third-party service providers you will support us as we evolve the environmental strategy and set targets on carbon, waste and energy.

Working closely with the VP of Communications and our Public Affairs team you will provide invaluable support, feeding into papers and plans for engagement with steering committees and/or wider stakeholder groups.

You will lead on the publication of an annual CR report: Develop and improve reporting frameworks and methodologies, including the introduction of Science Based Targets Implementing best practice recommendations, increasing the level of disclosure, drafting and reviewing content, and working with a design partner to deliver an engaging and visual report. 

You will work closely with our highly skilled Commercial and Procurement teams to ensure adherence to and ‘go-beyond’ The Social Value Act. 

Working alongside our talented HR and ED&I colleagues you will ensure that our Responsible Business commitments and opportunities for employees are reflected in the EVP and employee experience, throughout the employee lifecycle.

Your ability to identify and form strong partnerships within the Responsible Business ecosystem will be pivotal in supporting us to maximise our contributions to SDG 17 - the UN Partnerships goal. Partners might include, for example, We Mean Business, Race to Zero etc. You will also work with our Focus Area and other leads to oversee and coordinate the NNL COP26 presence and role. 

Your ownership and leadership of the our Social & Community Investment contributions will  include:

  • Implementing changes that have been recommended following a recent review of existing charitable giving and volunteering programmes
  • Enabling and increasing focused (SDGs 10 and 13 related) employee volunteering, and related learning and development opportunities
  • Managing and building relationships with relevant community partners, charities and social enterprises

The Ideal Candidate

Your experience needs to cover:

  • Experience in developing a best in class CR report to recognised methodologies (e.g. GRI ).
  • Understanding and experience of responding to key indices (e.g. DJSI, CDP).
  • An understanding of the ED&I landscape and how this presents opportunities to deliver social impact, as well as knowledge of and empathy with HR team work
  • Strong written skills and the ability to manage the delivery of a wide range of documents such as policy, thought leadership proposals, narratives, reports and strategy documents.
  • Strong people skills, high empathy
  • Project management skills.
  • Relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience in a relevant field.

The successful candidate is likely to be educated to degree level, however, candidates with corresponding “on the job” experience will also be considered.

Desirable - An understanding of the national and international nuclear and/or energy landscape, including academia, industry, government and multinational organizations.
